Digital Heritage Innovation Labs

Innovation and capacity building sit at the heart of Ceritalah’s programs. Our Digital Heritage Innovation Labs bring together urban placemakers, community storytellers, site custodians, artists and technologists to explore new ways of preserving heritage, telling local narratives and connecting to audiences in accessible and inclusive ways.

Digital Heritage x Innovation

Digital opens up new possibilities for how we interact with the world. Tourism, heritage and cultural sectors are no exception as digital transformation creates accessible and interactive ways for visitors to engage with stories, places and communities. From mobile site activations and AI personalisation to blockchain and web3 technologies, creative technology can inspire new generations to not only engage in their history, but be part of telling their own story.

Ceritalah is part of Think City’s future-thinking digital museology initiatives, focusing on innovation to keep history interesting and relevant. The program is part of our goals to support digital transformation across the heritage sector, setting new benchmarks for creativity, accessibility and best practise. By embracing emerging technologies and rethinking traditional models, we can ensure that our museums and heritage sector remains vibrant, inclusive and future-ready.

Spotlight on the inaugural Ceritalah Heritage Innovation Lab 2024

The inaugural Ceritalah Heritage Innovation Lab brought together ten community storytellers, site custodians and digital artists to explore how they can build new ways to connect with audiences and challenge traditional museum formats by using digital to take stories to the streets! The 3-day workshop and 4 month virtual lab created a space for artists and storytellers to experiment, exchange, network, and collaborate.

The focus of this year’s lab was exploring how using Augmented Reality can connect community and visitors to places and stories in more meaningful ways. The approach was to start by considering ‘Process over Product’ where we supported artists and technologists to engage in more meaningful collaborations with community members and site custodians, white innovating in the field. The thematic focus of the Lab was to consider how to use mobile technology and augmented reality to  explore local myths, legends and stories connected to specific sites around George Town.

The approach can be summarised below:
1. Reflect on your connection to heritage and places.
2. Play and experiment with ideas to honour stories in George Town.
3. Share original concepts with peers to discuss and expand upon.
4. Connect with relevant communities to learn and grow.
5. Engage in meaningful collaborations with communities around town.
6. Create Augmented Reality artworks that respond to places, culture, and stories.
