Beach Street
Beach Street is one of the oldest roads in Penang with over 200 years of history. It originally ran along the seafront which served as a port for traders. It has since shifted inland after land reclamation projects in the 19th century.
As the city grew, Beach Street evolved into a financial district and witnessed several historic milestones: the first street lamp, the first tarred road, and the establishment of Penang’s first shopping mall.
Today, Beach Street is a commercial hub with a mix of financial institutions, local businesses and eateries. Take a stroll along the street and take note of all the sights, sounds and smells you encounter, informing both our colonial past and contemporary present.
