Little India

Little India is a vibrant and colourful quarter centred around the ethnic Indian community in Penang. The enclave covers several streets and is popular for its food, cultural and religious offerings. Known as Market Street among the locals, Little India remains an important enclave, especially for the Indian community who frequent the space to purchase spices, prayer items, jewellery, traditional outfits and cookware. Stroll through the area in the morning and you'll see urli pots with flowers or turmeric water along shop entrances as a symbol of prosperity and positive energy. In the afternoons, follow the trail of spices for a cup of masala tea and a bite of vadai from the street stalls.

This site is AR-activated by Kausalyaa Sugumarin, a dance artist whose work explores the everyday interactions that occur along Market Street.

Artist Statement:

A Tale of Rediscovery dives into the lively atmosphere of a busy street, capturing everyday moments that bring the community together.

By spending time in the streets and alleys, I have closely observed and recorded all the different activities and conversations that take place. From people strolling along the streets, shopkeepers tending their shops, tired children and their parents, to the Hindu priest ringing the prayer bell—each element paints a picture of daily life along Market Street and in Little India. This project documents how these ordinary movements come together to reflect the unique spirit of this community and place.

As a dancer and community member, I am deeply rooted within this ecosystem and inspired by the cultural and environmental significance of the five elements. This is further explored through the colours of the AR models, adding depth and meaning to movement, interactions and the spirit of this experience.

Kausalyaa Sugumarin is a traditional Bharatanatyam dancer who reflects on her relationship with Market Street by mirroring and observing the movements of the people who make the place.
