Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower
The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower was built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A stark reminder of Penang’s colonial past, the tower stands 60 feet tall, with each foot representing one year of Queen Victoria's reign as Monarch. The tower was commissioned by the affluent Chinese trader Cheah Chen Eok and designed by municipal engineer Robert Peirce. Each section of the Tower represents the major communities under the Queen’s rule and includes the Muslim community (dome and belfry), Indian (clock floor), European (first chamber) and Chinese (ground floor).
If you look carefully, you might notice the tower is slightly tilted from a near-miss during the Japanese bombing of George Town in WWII. Close one eye if you can’t!
