Sri Mahamariamman Temple
Established in the early 1800s, the Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Penang. It is dedicated to Mariamman, the Goddess of disease, rain, and protection. Mariamman is derived from two words: Mari meaning power, and amman meaning mother.
Starting as a small shrine, the temple grew into a beautiful South Indian Dravidian-style structure to accommodate the increasing Hindu population on the Island. Its most outstanding feature is a 23.5-foot tall Gopuram (tower) decorated with intricate sculptures of thirty-eight Hindu deities.
Upholding its legacy of a “home away from home,” Sri Mahamariamman Temple continues to be a beloved place of worship for locals and a comforting spiritual home for the many foreign workers living and working in town.
